Individual Giving

As a donor to The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, you play a vital role in the performance, preservation and education of Afrocentric music traditions. The cost for performing this energetic, dynamic and compelling music is significant. The Chorale sustains its activity through ticket and CD sales, touring, government and foundation grants, corporate sponsorships and the support of individual donors like you. Your gift allows the Chorale to entertain and educate audiences far and wide. The Chorale realizes that giving is a personal commitment, and so the Chorale provides you with the ability to direct your gift towards your area of interest.

AREAS OF INTEREST

General Operations

A gift to general operations allows the Chorale to direct funds to the area of greatest need.

Performance and Rehearsal

Many have said that ensemble members make the performance of challenging works seem easy. Practice, practice, and more practice makes a perfect performance. Most government funders do not cover the cost of rehearsals, but rehearse we must.

  • $500 will cover one hour of rehearsal for the Chorale
  • $200 will tune the piano for a performance
  • $50 buys a score for one piece of music

Outreach and Education

The Chorale is committed to educating the public on issues of African heritage, musical history and performance practice

  • $750 will pay for one school’s grade 5 or 8 classes to participate in the Canaan Lan’ Project: workbooks and teaching plans provided, an in-class visit from a chorale member, educational material, and a school performance
  • $500 will train a Chorale member to go into classes and work with teachers and students on educational projects
  • $250 will pay for one class to attend a student matinee
  • $100 will pay for the production of educational materials to be used in one school
  • $25 will pay for an underprivileged student to attend a Chorale concert

Commissioning

Your gift provides opportunities for composers working in Afrocentric traditions to create music that will be performed by the Chorale.

For a $250 donation you can join the Commissioning Club. This club provides you with the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing creation of new works for The Chorale. Previous commissions have included Stewart Goodyear’s Go Down Death and The Crucifixion, settings of James Weldon Johnson’s God Trombones; and Chorale alumnus Charles Demuynck’s Ah voltige mon amour, based on poetry by the late Haitian-Canadian poet Gerard Étienne.

Recording Angel

Recording ensures that people everywhere can have access to the work of The Chorale. It ensures the preservation of the important music we perform and extends the concert experience into your everyday life.

  • $2,000 rents the studio for recording
  • $1,000 covers the cost of post-production
  • $500 will cover the cost of additional musicians needed for a recording session
  • $150 pays for one singer’s fees at a recording session
