Looking out into the audience at every concert I feel proud to say "This is my Toronto." Thank you for helping to establish The Nathaniel Dett Chorale as an ensemble in residence at The Toronto Centre for the Arts. Thank you for your support in the years leading up to this year and for sharing us with your friends.
I am excited to build on this foundation. This season I will continue to introduce you to some of the great minds in Afrocentric Choral music as we present a stunning and bold work for the holidays - Snow Angel by Sarah Quartel (music) and Lisa Helps (narrative). This work dramatizes the relationship between humans and angels who may well be one and the same; it will be presented along with Glen Burleigh’s Nguzo Saba Suite in celebration of Kwanzaa.
In February we will return to a Latin American focus with Missa Afro-Brasiliera by Brazilian composer Carlos Alberto Pinto Fonseca and Misa Criolla by Argentinian composer Ariel Ramierez. In May we will introduce you to the Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor; performing two of his cantatas taken from Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha.
We will also continue the creation of new works this season with Let My People Go and Crucifixion, ongoing installments in Canadian composer and concert pianist Stewart Goodyear’s God’s Trombones Cycle based on James Weldon Johnson’s poetic cycle of the same name. We will also premiere Ah voltige mon amour by Canadian composer, conductor and Chorale alumnus Charles Demuynck; set to text of Haitian-Canadian poet Gérard Étienne.
Join us as we continue to surprise, challenge, broaden, excite and move.
